I have often wanted to drown my troubles,
but I can’t get my wife to go swimming.

~ Jimmy Carter
American – President Born: October 1, 1924

Porte Musings:

OK, so as a comedian Jimmy Carter wasn’t the most famous or the best. He considered himself a failure as a President because he was only elected for one term and wasn’t re-elected. But he did believe in equality, gay marriage, and ensured that Rowe vs Wade was upheld. His actions always spoke louder than his words as he worked hands on with Habitat for Humanity to build affordable homes. Yes, the peanut farmer who grew up to be the President of the United States embodied the American Dream. His faith was the foundation for his actions. Happy 98th Birthday Jimmy Carter.

“At 98 years old, Carter is both the oldest living and longest-lived president, as well as the one with the longest post-presidency, and his 76-year-long marriage makes him the longest-married president. He is also the third-oldest living person to have served as a state leader.” ~ https://en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Jimmy_Carter

Today is the Canadian National Day for Truth and Reconciliation or Orange Shirt Day. We remember the Residential School Survivors and wear an Orange shirt to honour the children who attended them. Stripped of their favorite shirts, hair cut, languages and cultures lost, intergenerational trauma. Children ripped from their homes to attend schools in far away places some of who never returned home, their bodies to be found decades later in unmarked graves.

You can’t wear an orange shirt because you can’t afford one? That’s OK take an orange marker and draw an orange heart on the back of your hand. Listen today to the words being played on local radio stations and let’s live as equals sharing the same rights and privileges in this wonderful country. Celebrate our differences while we honour each other in peace.

Today is the day my husband goes for his shoulder surgery. It’s been more than 20 years since he was first told surgery was the only solution. Doctors change and technology improves so hopefully the surgery stops the pain and allows my husband to use his arm again.

I don’t know what my path is yet.
I’m just walking on it.

~ Olivia Newton-John
Musician / Born: September 26, 1948 Died: August 8, 2022

Porte Musings:

Busy weekend over and I’m ready for the 2nd Repatha shot. If the weather co-operates I’ll also be going on my second ride with CMC 021. I really am a fair weather only rider.

Of all the songs Olivia Newton-John did when she passed everyone only remembered her for Grease but I remember her for Physical and the Promise (the Dolphin Song) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jau-m6qlc84.

So, even though you may not know your path, keep walking it ❤

Saturday and it looks to be a full and interesting day.

I’m starting off with a trip to the Lion’s Club at 7AM to set up a photo booth for the Strathroy-Caradoc 150th Anniversary. I’m so lucky to be part of this monumental anniversary.

After a busy morning, I’m going to spend some quality time with my Granddaughter.

Then for supper I’m meeting with the Canada Post Heritage Club and friends for supper.

No sailboat would sail without a motor, you never know if the the winds might stop and leave you on the lake. Same when your making plans, you always need a motor in case the winds aren’t pushing you in the direction you want to go.

Municipal Elections are rapidly approaching on October 24th in Ontario. Be certain to check out the candidates and exercise your democratic privilege to vote.

Remember the Cottagers who weren’t allowed to go to their properties during the pandemic? They have the right to vote wherever they own property. Yes, for Municipal elections you can vote in every Municipal Riding where you own property. So if you own 100 properties in 100 Municipal ridings you can vote 100 times, once in each riding. I hope they use the right and vote the incumbents out. Cottagers are already penalized for being “outsiders” by higher taxes and licensing fees. Cottager owners need to use their voting rights and say no more to being outsiders. Attend the local meetings and voice opinions about property access, taxes and fees. Why does a cottage cost $4,000 to rent for a week? Because the licensing fees are $2,000 or more and the taxes are more than $5,000.

Do your homework and vote.

The first official Day of Fall and the weather is going to accentuate the statement with a high of only 12C and a low tonight of 4C (frost is possible).

As I’ve seen in memes on Facebook, the trees are preparing to show us how beautiful it can be to give up.

Last night’s Strathroy-Caradoc Horticultural Meeting was a wonderful slide show presentation by Valerie. She showed us a wonderful International Topiary exhibit held in Montreal several years ago. Some of the displays were over 10 stories high. She also showed us flowers from her garden.

Fall is a busy time for gardeners as they bring in tender bulbs and plants, prepare the beds for winter, then get busy planting new bulbs for next spring. It’s a wonderful time to plant trees and shrubs as they can establish new roots during the winter and then sprout new branches in the spring.

Then gardeners prepare to cocoon during the winter with seed catalogues or travel to warmer places where they can tend gardens in the winter or look for new gardening ideas.

This week is a big week for the Strathroy-Caradoc Horticultural Society. We have a meeting tonight and a 150th Anniversary Brunch this Saturday. I’ve volunteered to provide a photo booth for the Brunch. My favorite background is a garden with a gate. I’ll e-mail everyone a copy of their picture and provide a 4×6″ picture at the next meeting. I’ve designed and printed out a permission/contact sheet and am still thinking of ways to keep 80 participants in order and send the right one to the right e-mail. I’m thinking a white board to take placemark photos.

Looking on the web for solutions they recommended immediacy rather than sending to individual e-mails but, sending by e-mail will ensure they have my e-mail/contact information for future bookings. Yes, I’m shamelessly advertising and providing a free service for one of my favorite charities.

Yesterday I went for my first Motorcycle ride with CMC 021 (Canadian Motorcycle Cruisers). I was very nervous about joining a group of strangers for a ride. Luckily they were a very welcoming group, I even discovered I knew some of the people. We met at Tim Hortons in Strathroy and went for a short ride to Glencoe via Muncey (the long scenic route). The leader gave clear directions and was easy to follow. Because I was new to the group I got to ride directly behind the leader. It’s been a long time since I rode with a group and never with a formal group. When we reached our destination the leader said I followed well and there were no problems that he saw. Everyone had a coffee then we left our separate ways. There are only 2 more weekly rides left in 2022, but I’m glad I joined. Looking forward to future rides with CMC.
