Porte Musings:

The first official Day of Fall and the weather is going to accentuate the statement with a high of only 12C and a low tonight of 4C (frost is possible).

As I’ve seen in memes on Facebook, the trees are preparing to show us how beautiful it can be to give up.

Last night’s Strathroy-Caradoc Horticultural Meeting was a wonderful slide show presentation by Valerie. She showed us a wonderful International Topiary exhibit held in Montreal several years ago. Some of the displays were over 10 stories high. She also showed us flowers from her garden.

Fall is a busy time for gardeners as they bring in tender bulbs and plants, prepare the beds for winter, then get busy planting new bulbs for next spring. It’s a wonderful time to plant trees and shrubs as they can establish new roots during the winter and then sprout new branches in the spring.

Then gardeners prepare to cocoon during the winter with seed catalogues or travel to warmer places where they can tend gardens in the winter or look for new gardening ideas.

It’s okay to take time for yourself.
We give so much of ourselves to others and
we need to be fueled both physically and mentally.
If we are in balance, it helps us in all our interactions.

Porte Musings:

This week is a big week for the Strathroy-Caradoc Horticultural Society. We have a meeting tonight and a 150th Anniversary Brunch this Saturday. I’ve volunteered to provide a photo booth for the Brunch. My favorite background is a garden with a gate. I’ll e-mail everyone a copy of their picture and provide a 4×6″ picture at the next meeting. I’ve designed and printed out a permission/contact sheet and am still thinking of ways to keep 80 participants in order and send the right one to the right e-mail. I’m thinking a white board to take placemark photos.

Looking on the web for solutions they recommended immediacy rather than sending to individual e-mails but, sending by e-mail will ensure they have my e-mail/contact information for future bookings. Yes, I’m shamelessly advertising and providing a free service for one of my favorite charities.

The glory of gardening:
hands in the dirt,
head in the sun,
heart with nature.

To nurture a garden is to feed
not just on the body, but the soul.

Porte Musings…

Yesterday was our Annual Horticultural Society Plant Sale. Such a wonderful tradition to share our bounty with our neighbours and friends. Everyone brings their surplus plants to sell to raise funds for the Strathroy-Caradoc Horticultural Society. I donated all of my tomato plants that were surplus, Including Black Krim, Sicilian, Rugers, Cherry and some eggplants. Volunteers price the plants and group them according to price. Then the fun begins as people come to purchase great bargains. I got 2 fern leaf peonies, a fern, a large peony and a small ornamental for only $10.

2021 Annual plant sale.

How fitting that today is Water a Flower Day. I’m hoping all the threats of frost are finally done for the season and I can plant the remainder of my garden today.

Today is also Neighbour Day. So whoever your neighbours are, whether across the street or around the world, wish them well and maybe share some of your garden treasures with them. ❤

We also are remembering that we need to continue research and raise funds to find a cure for MS on MS Day. Disguising as many different symptoms and difficult to diagnose this disease has so many different forms and ruins so many lives. Ride for a Cure has gone from a 5 Kilometer bike ride where everyone was gathered at one time to a 5 K ride anywhere to raise funds. Please support our riders this year and help find a cure.

Second shots for the COVID-19 Vaccine are now available for Indigenous people in Ontario, so my husband got his yesterday. It is being forecast that all people in Ontario that want to be vaccinated will be completed by the end of August.
