Don’t forget to tell yourself positive things daily!
You must love yourself internally to glow externally.

Did you notice the turtle on the log in the picture? The wild rice has all turned golden and my latest kayak adventure on the Old Ausable Channel had the lowest turtle count yet. I only found 12 turtles sunbathing.

People often say that motivation doesn’t last.
Well, neither does bathing
– that’s why we recommend it daily.

It’s getting harder to get up in the mornings as the night is staying longer. The later sunrises are a challenge for my exercise routines.

But the fall colours are just starting to peak in the area and the reds are showing their best.

The temperatures have been hovering around 20C and it’s been amazing to kayak this late in October. The weatherman says it’s coming to an end as a cold front is due to go through tonight with winds of up to 90 KM per hour. Here’s hoping some of the leaves hang on a while longer.

Love and magic have a great deal in common.
They enrich the soul, delight the heart.
And they both take practice.

Nora Roberts is my husband’s favorite author. He has over 100 books to prove it. We went to Ireland just to see some of the places she has written about. So on this Thanksgiving Monday, after the turkey dinner and family celebrating yesterday it seems like a good day to curl up with one of her books and just relax.

Yep, painted turtles sunbathing in October. We saw almost 40 of them while kayaking this week on the Old Ausable Channel. Just trying to catch a few rays of the warm autumn days.

Thanksgiving weekend and the turkeys are thawing out for the big event. This year there are no “COVID Restrictions” . I’m so blessed, my whole family will be here. I bought 2 smaller turkeys so we can have 4 legs instead of 2.

Harold’s shoulder surgery went well and he’s using his right arm again. His follow-up is next week, then he starts therapy. I’m hoping we can book a vacation in Cuba. Sit on a beach and get some of those southern rays. 😉

As I get older,
I have a different look on life.
I just try to be a little more tolerant and a little bit more centered about what’s going on around me and not so emotional.

October Kayaking with my sister we came upon a cormorant sitting on a log cleaning itself. There was absolute silence around us. Then she blew a bubble and smacked it. The sound was like a gunshot as it echoed on the channel. The cormorant immediately hung her wings up looking bigger and more fierce. Snap went the camera. As soon as she determined it was safe he flew off. After all she thought she had found the perfect sanctuary during hunting season in the Provincial Park. Stop the hunt. https://euc.yorku.ca/research-spotlight/ontarios-cormorant-hunt-and-what-it-means-for-its-future/

Growing older does permit you to sit back and be more patient. Thank goodness the mood swings have slowed to a stop and time can be savoured.

This weekend is the Canadian Thanksgiving. A time to get together with family and friends. A time to be thankful for everything we have. Lift up a toast: Live long and prosper.

Porte Musings:

Sunny, windless days in October are rare, so take advantage and get outside before the cooler weather gets here. Yesterday was 20C and calm, so my sister and I went kayaking at Pinery Provincial Park.

The water was clear and most of the algae blooms had retreated to their winter havens. Fish floated past. About 30 turtles were sitting on logs to gain the last rays of sun before they go to sleep for the winter. A lone cormorant was taking advantage of the park sanctuary during hunting season. My sister popped her bubble gum and the echo was like a gun shot. The cormorant spread its wings in fear then flew off. Turkey vultures were sitting in a tree as there were no wind currents to glide on. Peace and calm.

I learned hard lessons in life;
I had to because I had so much happen:
My mother died my sophomore year in high school.
The next year, same day, my brother dropped dead.
Two years after that, I got married because my girlfriend got pregnant.
The year after my wedding, my father – who I had only recently met – died.

Wow this weather is amazing. Today’s going to be another perfect fall day with a high of about 20C. I’m planning on going kayaking. I bought a spice bush, cardinal flowers, butterfly weed, blue lobelia, and a butterfly bulb collection to create a small butterfly garden. I also laid newspaper around the plants and woodchips then watered well. Next spring I’ll add dill and parsley. I love butterflies and my garden was getting tired so it was time to spice it up a bit and make it a bit tidier. Hopefully the newspaper and woodchips help keep the weeding down. I am getting older and hate weeding now more than ever.

Morning glories have taken over my front gardens. It’s almost Halloween. Once Halloween is over I’ll tear down the decorations. Time to paint some Halloween themed paintings. 😉

If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude,
then animals are better off than a lot of humans.

Rickie certainly feels love and loyalty and gratitude.

One of my favorite memes: A man dies and goes to heaven. At the first gate there are glorious statues and gardens There is a sign that says Welcome to Heaven, and another sign that says “NO DOGS ALLOWED”. The man says if dogs aren’t allowed I don’t want to go there. So, he continues along the path and comes to a second gate. He can see beyond the gate are dogs running, large trees and forests. He approaches the gate and is welcomed. He asks the gatekeeper about the first gate. The gatekeeper says: oh, that is actually Hell, it weeds out a lot of people. After all what would heaven be without dogs?

I intend to live forever,
or die trying.

~ Groucho Marx
American – Comedian October 2, 1890 – August 19, 1977

Porte Musings:

Groucho Marx, a comedian who was known to play a curmudgeon old man with a unique outlook on the world. But I agree with this philosophy. I’ve already told my grandchildren I’m living to be 120. Now that I’ve lived longer than both of my parents it seems like I could make it come true.

Luckily group activities have resumed. 3 weeks of Zumba on Fridays and 5 more to go. Put a smile on your face, do what you can and most importantly have fun.

Daily walks with my sister at least 3-4 times a week.

Kayaking at least 1 a week.

Motorcycling with CMC 021 now also added to my list of things to do.

Church on Sundays, with Junior Church (or Sunday School) starting again today.

Yes, I might just live to be 120 or die trying. ❤
