Strathroy Caradoc Horticultural Society – 150th Anniversary – Saturday, September 24, 2022

Amazing!!!

The volunteers and organizers did an outstanding job of preparing and providing this event to Celebrate 150 years of people getting together to share their interest in Horticulture.

Below is a slide show of the Strathroy-Caradoc Horticultural Society’s 150th Anniversary Celebration:

Porte Musings:

Yesterday was busy.

I have pictures to edit for the Strathroy-Caradoc Horticultural Society’s 150th Anniversary. I’ve never seen a group of volunteers swoop in decorate and set-up for a party so fast and with such attention to detail. By the time I was done setting up the photo booth the facility was changed from an empty room to an amazing space to celebrate. 30 of the 80 participants had their pictures taken at the photo booth. So now to edit and e-mail the pictures to the correct participants. Only 1 person didn’t want their photos shared on social media.

Similarly the Canada Post Heritage Club Annual Dinner was also amazing. Seeing co-workers again after so many years was wonderful. As always there were enough door prizes for everyone. The Magician was amazing. I have no idea how he got Ursula’s $20 bill inside the lemon and neither does she. Bob looked amazing at 83; Wayne’s sense of humour still brings a laugh; Sherry’s laugh is still just as wonderful; and it’s hard to believe that youthful Theresa has retired.

Many of the COVID restrictions are no longer in place but the varied rules are confusing to all of us. Some of the participants for the 150th celebration couldn’t understand why they have to wear masks when they leave their rooms in their local nursing homes, but could attend our event without masks. I’m just hoping the hospital doesn’t have another outbreak before my husband’s surgery on Wednesday.

You can’t solve the world’s problems, but you can paint. To me the acrylic colours on the paintings seem to get more vibrant with age. The Autumn Fox I used for today’s quote is now up and hanging in the Den. The colours are more vibrant and the layering of colours seems to have more texture than last year.

Porte Musings:

The first official Day of Fall and the weather is going to accentuate the statement with a high of only 12C and a low tonight of 4C (frost is possible).

As I’ve seen in memes on Facebook, the trees are preparing to show us how beautiful it can be to give up.

Last night’s Strathroy-Caradoc Horticultural Meeting was a wonderful slide show presentation by Valerie. She showed us a wonderful International Topiary exhibit held in Montreal several years ago. Some of the displays were over 10 stories high. She also showed us flowers from her garden.

Fall is a busy time for gardeners as they bring in tender bulbs and plants, prepare the beds for winter, then get busy planting new bulbs for next spring. It’s a wonderful time to plant trees and shrubs as they can establish new roots during the winter and then sprout new branches in the spring.

Then gardeners prepare to cocoon during the winter with seed catalogues or travel to warmer places where they can tend gardens in the winter or look for new gardening ideas.

It’s okay to take time for yourself.
We give so much of ourselves to others and
we need to be fueled both physically and mentally.
If we are in balance, it helps us in all our interactions.

Porte Musings:

This week is a big week for the Strathroy-Caradoc Horticultural Society. We have a meeting tonight and a 150th Anniversary Brunch this Saturday. I’ve volunteered to provide a photo booth for the Brunch. My favorite background is a garden with a gate. I’ll e-mail everyone a copy of their picture and provide a 4×6″ picture at the next meeting. I’ve designed and printed out a permission/contact sheet and am still thinking of ways to keep 80 participants in order and send the right one to the right e-mail. I’m thinking a white board to take placemark photos.

Looking on the web for solutions they recommended immediacy rather than sending to individual e-mails but, sending by e-mail will ensure they have my e-mail/contact information for future bookings. Yes, I’m shamelessly advertising and providing a free service for one of my favorite charities.
