So far so good with the New Year’s Resolutions.

Pot Lucks in Florida are always a challenge.

So I’m going to tackle them the same way you would a buffet. Look over the entire spread and choose ahead of time what to splurge on and what to avoid. Fresh food vs processed. Make a small plate the same as you would at home. Limit myself to 1 dessert, and a small portion at that. The day of eat smaller portions throughout the day.

The day after get back on track. Don’t slack off on the exercise or be disappointed if you overdid it.

Porte Ponderings:

Sunday in the Indian Summer. The temperatures today will be at about 21C (70F). The trees are still showing their colours and a killing frost has finally gotten rid of a lot of the allergens in the air.

This season is probably one of my favorites, but there is so much to do before winter steals her way into the shorter days. I still have plants from the Fall plant sale to put in the ground. The summer toys need to be put away. The garage needs to be cleaned to make room for my car before we head to Florida. But my heart wants one more kayak ride down the Old Ausable Channel. I have school photo retakes tomorrow morning, then I’m headed to the Pinery with my sister for one last adventure of the season.

Porte Ponderings:

Our local conservation area is amazing this time of year. Someone who knew the beauty of trees in the fall lined the path with glorious maples that are fiery red in October. I was lucky enough to have customers/models on Sunday. I’ve included clauses regarding the use of photos for advertising and always respect when people don’t want their photos shared. My immediate family is used to me taking their pictures.

The weather was co-operative, a little too much so. It was a bright sunny day and proved to be challenging for shadows and glare. But I think this photo caught the fall magic.

Beautiful red arches towering over my favorite models ❤

Did you notice the turtle on the log in the picture? The wild rice has all turned golden and my latest kayak adventure on the Old Ausable Channel had the lowest turtle count yet. I only found 12 turtles sunbathing.

Yep, painted turtles sunbathing in October. We saw almost 40 of them while kayaking this week on the Old Ausable Channel. Just trying to catch a few rays of the warm autumn days.

Thanksgiving weekend and the turkeys are thawing out for the big event. This year there are no “COVID Restrictions” . I’m so blessed, my whole family will be here. I bought 2 smaller turkeys so we can have 4 legs instead of 2.

Harold’s shoulder surgery went well and he’s using his right arm again. His follow-up is next week, then he starts therapy. I’m hoping we can book a vacation in Cuba. Sit on a beach and get some of those southern rays. 😉

Porte Musings:

This week is full of birthdays in our family, today my niece, born 1 day after my grandson in the same hospital, celebrates her 11th birthday. I think we just wanted an excuse to eat cake everyday the first week of September. 😉

Familial Cholesterolemia type II runs in our family as well. Although diet does play a small part in high cholesterol levels, our DNA is a much bigger contributor. My mother had her first cardiac arrest at 38 and died with her second at 43. Her Cholesterol and triglycerides were high, but there were very few options to reduce it. Her father died with his first cardiac arrest at 36 after a short walk to his brother’s house (with no previous indications that he had a cholesterol problem). My younger sister had a DNA test to confirm she has the gene, so at 57 after taking cholesterol medications, she was prescribed Repatha, an injectable to help lower her LDL numbers. Since I have a significant family history; high levels even with 40 Mg Crestor and 10 mg Ezetimibe; and I have a confirmed immediate family member; I will also be starting Repatha. Hopefully my LDL will go below 0.5 and I can reduce the other 2 medications. I hate needles, but today and every other week I’ll be taking this shot to help reduce the effects of high cholesterol.

Yesterday’s adventure was a trip to Point Pelee National Park, Leamington Ontario with my sister and my kayaks. The launch there is beautiful, easy to access and easy to use. You can do a short 1 hour kayak along the boardwalk or branch out into the adjoining “lakes”. But be careful, once you get out into one of the smaller lakes, everything can start to look the same with tall reeds all around you. We had a small panic moment, but found our way out and back to the boardwalk for lunch after an almost 4 hour kayak.

Our adventure started with a guided tour along the boardwalk by a beautiful pair of Mute Swans. In the larger Lake Pond we were shown their 4 babies, now adolescents.

The kayaking was wonderful so we thought we would go on the tram to the point. However, we didn’t bring long pants and the flies were biting, so we cut the trip short.
