“Let us be French,
let us be English,
but most importantly
let us be Canadian!”~ John A. Macdonald
First prime minister of Canada
Born on: 11th January 1815Porte Ponderings:
Our First Prime Minister is surrounded with controversy as we look back with current knowledge. But nevertheless he was our First Prime Minister. By eliminating history we are forced to relive the same errors.
Yes, slaves were a fact of life during periods of history and slave owners were wealthy and among the leaders of their time.
Yes, colonialism happened. Natives were forced to live on reservations and treaties weren’t adhered to. How can we do better together?
But we fought for our independence in a different way from the USA.
The war of 1812 brought Natives and the colonials together to keep our independence from the USA. Reading American texts they say they won the war, but from our point of view we won by maintaining our independence and resisting their attempts at claiming our land. Something that is now being threatened again by our neighbours and friends to the south.
