Porte Ponderings:

I attended a free Wildlife Photography Seminar sponsored by Camera Canada last night in London Ontario. It was amazing to see the new SONY technology in a hands-on display. No, I didn’t win the $1,000 camera that was the door prize, but I can dream.

Camera Canada is also having a Photography Day 2024 on October 6th at Pioneer Village, Fanshawe Conservation Area. For only $15 you get village admission and lunch. Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.cameracanada.com/photoday2024 Ticket registration opens August 1st.

The guest speaker, Joe Tavares, gave us his formula for taking photos like his amazing shots. He said the key is to get down to eye-to-eye level. Although not all of us can afford to go on Safaris or afford the amazing equipment that he used, we can follow the simple advice. Composition and inspiration only costs your imagination and time. Getting eye-to-eye with wildlife may take some creativity, but it is how you get timeless shots. Joe Tavares shares his photos on Facebook using the name: Joe T Mirrorless. I’ve already added him to my friends. His photos are awe inspiring.

If you think it’s expensive
to hire a professional to do the job,
wait until you hire an amateur.

It’s hot out. So hot we decided to stay at the lake for the week. It was 38C at the pool in Strathroy yesterday when we went home briefly for an appointment. It was only 29C at the lake. Still hot, but there’s an amazing breeze coming off the lake up to our trailer. We can still attend our appointments and keep our commitments from here, but it’s cooler. 😉

A great imposter, the Viceroy Butterfly is often mistaken for a Monarch. It is slightly smaller and had an additional stripe on it’s lower wing. This one was resting momentarily on a Burdock leaf near the beach at Port Glasgow Trailer Park. It is the state butterfly of Kentucky but is common in Ontario during the summers.

Sometimes a change in perspective can create a unique photo. The photo I used for today’s quote is an example of a change in perspective. Usually butterflies are seen from their topside with wings wide open. This photo is from the underside as the Gulf Fritillary was feeding on a small white flower. Using Aperture mode the details of the butterfly and flowers are sharp and the background is blurred to emphasise the details of the subject. Aperture Mode is my favorite.

Porte Ponderings:

Yesterday I went hiking at Wilderness Park, Morris Bridge Road. I thought I’d walk the cedar trail to the outlook and around to the start. Unfortunately the path was underwater about 500 feet before I got to the outlook. So back I headed. Another couple walking the same trail also headed back. We missed our turn and ended up surrounded by water. We saw a small alligator and headed back to the turn. They were an interesting couple with a modern love story. They had dated in high school, but went their separate ways. Each had lived a full life, but events left them alone (Her husband had died and his wife had divorced him). They re-connected through Facebook, have now been together for 5 year and are planning their wedding in Hawaii next year. They are looking for a destination wedding photographer (not something I do) and showed me their beautiful engagement photos that they had paid $400 for. Well, they got their money’s worth. The photos were amazing. As we parted ways I said I’ll see them again on Facebook and gave them my business card. I then went to chase butterflies and got the amazing shot in today’s quote.
