Porte Ponderings:

Finally a day when I could go kayaking.

My favorite spot is the Old Ausable Chanel at Pinery Provincial Park.

I spotted a little movement among the Lily pads. There were 2 little ducklings swimming and eating. No parents or siblings in sight. They stuck together playing never very far from each other. They were so light they could walk on the lily pads. This baby was just climbing up from the water. They didn’t even seem afraid as I sat very still in the kayak. Just 2 babies comforting each other. Their chances for survival alone on the channel were very slim. But they had each other for the moment.

Well, according to AI: “Wood Ducks do leave their young after a relatively short period. While the mother duck stays with the ducklings for about a day after hatching, guiding them to a body of water and providing initial protection, she then leaves them to become independent. The ducklings are precocial, meaning they are well-developed at hatching and capable of foraging for themselves.
