Reading makes immigrants of us all.
It takes us away from home,
but more important,
it finds homes for us everywhere.

~ Jean Rhys
(English – NovelistAugust 24, 1894 – May 14, 1979)

Holidays and Celebrations:

Porte Musings:

Today is a remembrance of one of the lesser celebrated apostles, Bartholomew (Bart).

Today is also National Waffle Day, so be certain to enjoy a waffle or two.

For some people every day is Weather Complaint Day. Here we are approaching the end of August and still a major heat warning is in effect for most of Ontario. Today the high will be 32C and feeling like 44C. So keep cool, and drink plenty of fluids. It looks like we could have thunderstorms this afternoon and throughout the night, but no relief for the heat and humidity is in the forecast.

The first duty of love is to listen.

~ Paul Tillich
(German – TheologianAugust 20, 1886 – October 22, 1965)

Holidays and Celebrations:

Porte Musings:

If Love’s first duty is to listen, then today is the day to do it, while you celebrate National Radio Day. Remembering such an amazing invention, transmission of human voices through the air for free to your own listening device. Sharing music, poetry, comedy, news and advertisements…..

Locally West Nile has been detected in mosquitos. So to remember World Mosquito Day, get out there and dump and standing pools of water to reduce the places for mosquito larvae. That’s one of the reasons I keep gold fish in my little pond. I don’t support the use of pesticides to get rid of the mosquitos. The terrible, disease carrying pests are at the entry point of the food chain for frogs and fish. Using pesticides for mosquitos is also not insect specific and effects all “bugs” including people in the environment.

The tomatoes are turning red in the gardens and what a perfect day to celebrate National Bacon Day by having a toasted bacon and tomato sandwich for lunch. ❤

Hope is the only bee
that makes honey without flowers.

~ Robert Green Ingersoll
(American – LawyerAugust 11, 1833 – July 21, 1899)

Holidays and Celebrations:

Porte Musings:

Today celebrates all the freethinkers like Robert G. Ingersoll. So try reading some of his writings or just learn more about Robert today. His writings and lectures can be found online, and in books as well.

If that seems too much like work, you could choose to celebrate Play in the Sand Day. Go to your local beach and make a sand sculpture, or just wiggle your toes in the local sand box.

After working or playing all day you can end the day celebrating Raspberry Tart Day with a nice Raspberry tart or pie and some ice cream.

We’re in the middle of a wave with heat warnings, so take it easy, drink plenty of water and keep cool. 😉
