It is believed that Washington told his baker general, Christopher Ludwick, to come up with a soup that “will warm and strengthen the body of a soldier and inspire his flagging spirit.” Although National Pepper Pot Day celebrates Pepper Pot soup it is unlikely that Christopher Ludwick was the first to make it. Pepper Pot soup probably originated in the Caribbean with exotic spices and brought with the slaves and freedmen to the Americas. Warm spices and peppers to make a person warm inside and out.
