Time changes everything
except something within us
which is always surprised by change.

Porte Musings…

Wednesday, June 2nd is Global Running Day. I try not to make a habit of running, but in my youth I liked to run long distances. I ran cross country and enjoyed the 4 mile per day habit. Now if you see me running you know something is wrong.

On June 2nd, 1924 congress enacted the Indian Citizenship Act and declared all Indians born in the USA American Citizens. However, because voting privileges were under state control the right to vote was denied in many states until 1957. So much for democracy. At least we’re continuing in the right direction towards equality for all. In Canada there is probably no one who hasn’t heard of the unmarked mass grave of 215 children at the residential school in Kamloops. Many women married off the reserves to ensure that they could keep their children from the nightmares of residential schools and out of the children’s welfare arms. The enfranchisement of these women saved their children, but came at the cost of loosing their heritage, community and family ties. Finally the government has passed laws recognizing the matriarchal societies where clans were established through their mothers granting status to their children.

Today is also National Leave the Office Early Day. So be certain to get out there and enjoy the last days of spring.

We finally saw the Colon Cancer Specialist yesterday only to learn that my husband’s surgery can’t be done in our local hospital, but will need to be done in London because of the possible Kidney issues. Because he only has one kidney and is having high potassium issues they will need a dialysis machine nearby, just in case. So now we’re back into the waiting mode, while the surgeon in London is preparing for the treatment plan. The good news is that my husband won’t need a bag even during recovery. He will also be getting a stomach reduction to remove the small amount of cancer that has effected his stomach. Chemo will be required, but not the type that will make him loose his hair. Survival rates are high, but it is important to have surgery soon. Now we just wait………..
